Spring is springing and therefore boats should be boating

I have been waiting all winter to say aloud "boats should be boating". And now it's time! The Admiral (Roma) and I are heading down 'the hill' on Friday afternoon for a work-bee on Invictus. We'll take along the Vice Admiral too (the Admiral's dog Pahokee).

There is a long list of projects waiting to be done, but, in an effort to be realistic, I plan to install Roma's new propane range, finish the grid underneath the berth, install the downrigger mounts with their new leveling wedges, install two new flood lights for the cockpit, and (if there's time) build a storage rack under the saloon floor. That ought to fill up the weekend, eh?

Roma's task will be to set up her new mini microwave oven, provision Invictus with the essentials that we removed last fall, occasionally assist the cabin boy, and occasionally feed the cabin boy.

The grid under the berth is my effort to reduce (or hopefully eliminate) the moisture that accumulates under the mattress each night. It is constructed using red cedar strips in two layers that cross each other and is held together with #8 x 1 1/4" flathead sst screws. The job was slightly complicated by the three pull-up hatches under the mattress that had to still be removable.

The concept is twofold. 1. that air will circulate through the grid taking accumulated moisture out with it. And 2. the moisture from the mattress cannot contact the cold surfaces underneath. See photo below. This system really works. Even on the coldest dampest nights in October there is virtually no condensed moisture on the bottom of the mattress or the surface underneath.

We are installing a new propane range to replace the propane two burner cook top and microwave/convection oven that were original from the factory. The microwave oven was a power hog and required that we either be at the dock or that we run the generator. It had to go. I will post photos of the completed install next week.
A few photos from this year's cruising.
South Bentinck Arm is so beautiful.... and totally wilderness.

At the dock in Bella Coola waiting for the next cruise.

Spring salmon fishing was excellent this year.
