Hanging out in Haines, Chilkoot Inlet, AK.

We spent the last 2 nights anchored in West Sullivan Bight, North Lynn Canal, AK, a pretty spot and a welcome respite after a rough trip from Auke Bay. Though this morning’s weather forecast was similar to the previous two days, we decided to give it a go for Haines, just 22 nautical miles north. The seas were rough again and we considered back tracking to West Sullivan, but soldiered on and arrived in Haines not too much worse for the wear.

The forecast is for worsening conditions so we’ll stay tucked in here for the next 2 or 3 days before moving on to Skagway.

Haines is a small, picturesque town surrounded by high, ice-capped mountains and has a population of about 2,300.

The harbour office is the cutest one we’ve seen so far.

The long 'stilts' supporting the harbour office demonstrate the significant tidal range here. A big spring tide at Bella Coola is 15' or so. That's barely an average tide here where the really big ones go up to 30'. And the further north you go the greater the range, topping out at 40' in Cook Inlet, AK.

The first task for the day was to find the laundromat, which someone told us was not too far from the harbour. Harbours usually have a laundromat with shower facilities on site, or close by, for visiting boaters. The Moose Horn Laundry (with showers) turned out to be quite a hike from the harbour and, luckily, some nice people offered us a ride when they saw us slogging our way through town with our very full laundry bags.

The laundromat had a very impressive set of moose antlers hanging on the wall.
They remind me of an episode of the British TV show Fawlty Towers, in which a mounted moose head plays a significant role. Google it.

I guess they’ve had some problem dogs using up all the hot water.

Later we made a visit to the Haines Sheldon Museum, just half a block from the harbour.
If you’re ever in Haines we highly recommend taking some time to visit the museum.

After the museum visit we made a quick stop in the grocery store for a couple of necessities and came back to the boat for dinner.

Whatcha got in the bag, Peter?

Spot prawns that we pulled up in our prawn traps this morning. Yummy.

On tomorrow’s to do list is a visit to the Hammer Museum. 😊

In the meantime, we’ll have some dessert,
hot showers (on the boat, not the far away laundromat)
and shut eye, tucked in at the Haines Harbour.
